Marquetry Full Body Mirrorbooth

Design and Construction of a Marquetry Full Body Mirrorbooth

Mirrorbooth reimagines the photobooth as a sculptural design object, bringing together traditional woodworking, intricate marquetry, and interactive technology. Its distinctive elliptical form is constructed from flexible plywood, creating a continuous curved surface and a seamless silhouette. The exterior is entirely clad in marquetry, meticulously composed of natural and dyed veneers of oak, padauk, cotto, and black tulipier. Drawing inspiration from the aesthetics of the 1970s, the geometric pattern follows the contours of the structure, becoming an integral element of the object's visual identity. A specially treated mirror conceals the integrated display within the front surface. When the Mirrorbooth is switched off, the screen disappears from view, allowing the object to function as a conventional mirror. This seamless integration of technology preserves the purity of its form while maintaining its sculptural presence. The interior is carefully engineered to accommodate and protect all essential technical components, including the camera, display, computing unit, wiring, ventilation system, and power supply. A dedicated mount at the top accommodates an external flash, allowing the lighting configuration to be tailored to different environments and photographic requirements. The structure is supported by solid wood legs in a dark finish, conceived as both functional supports and defining aesthetic elements. The legs are detachable to facilitate transportation and storage, while an integrated mounting mechanism allows the unit to tilt with precision, enabling controlled adjustment of the mirror and camera angles. A custom-designed internal protective cover, inspired by the form of a traditional hatbox, completes the design, safeguarding the structure during transportation and storage. Designed to accommodate a range of applications, Mirrorbooth can be customised in terms of dimensions, veneer combinations, and colour finishes. Its versatility makes it suitable for hospitality environments, events, fashion brands, weddings, and premium commercial and residential interiors. More than a functional photographic device, Mirrorbooth is a bespoke design object in which the precision of contemporary technology meets the expressive potential of traditional woodworking. Every detail is considered as part of a unified design language, balancing technical performance, material richness, and sculptural form. This particular Mirrorbooth was designed and crafted for photographers Roula Moniaki and Viktoria Giannara.
